I loved Braydon with all my heart, but he had to let up a little. I was strong enough to get the information needed and get out within a few days. The papers I was given said I was to be stationed there as punishment. I hoped they would just have me be a server or general worker. I counted on nothing. The Elite set the rules, I intended to abide by them all, regardless of where the journey took me.
Within an hour we set out for the vehicles. I packed an emergency first aid kit of sorts if anything were to happen on the outside and included explicit instructions on what each potion and herb was used for.
We drove a short distance to a town called Landwall. I looked to my left as we pulled around the corner. Something about the structure seemed familiar to me. I could not place what it was. Had I been here before?
Braydon found me on the main road between Ashborne and his encampment. Landwall was the town nestled in between the two. Memories appeared so fast within the past few days that it would not have surprised me if some more came during the mission.
Braydon was right to be worried. If I went deep into my head the mission would be marked as a failure, and I would single-handedly place us all in danger. If that happened, I would face my death rather than have the others killed at my expense.
I neglected to tell Braydon of that decision. He was my everything and I was his, but if it came down to it, I would sacrifice myself for him without question.
Braydon looked over at me and saw the look on my face. He thought better of asking me if I remembered something; he knew if I triggered, I would tell him immediately. I stayed quiet during the drive. He told the rest of the team behind us that we had reached the entrance to the tunnels and prepared them for what they may or may not see within the dark, dank stone walls.
He eased the buggy into the entrance. It was big enough for the vehicles with room to spare on both sides. The first few feet were clear and void of people. The smell made my stomach turn. It smelled of sweat, blood, piss, shit, and rot. I figured I would have been used to it by now with all the foraging missions, but I was not.
I had hoped the travel through the tunnel would be uneventful, but my hope was cut short. Ahead of the buggy we saw herds of people. Women to be precise. A man walked behind them with a whip. If even one woman diverted from the pack, the whip cracked. Part of me wanted to leap out of the buggy and kick his fucking ass. Braydon held my wrist to keep me grounded.
Upon further observation, I noticed all the women wore burlap sacks as coverings. What the actual fuck? Braydon followed my eyes and his head whipped in my direction immediately.
